Data protection
Your rights over your personal data.
In Tanzania, the processing of personal data is governed by the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, in force since 1 May 2023, and by the Personal Data Protection (Personal Data Collection and Processing) Regulations, 2023. They grant you six rights that any organisation processing your data must respect.
- 01
Right to be informed
You must be told that your data is being processed, which data it is, why it is processed and who receives it.
- 02
Right to rectification
You can have data corrected when it is inaccurate, out of date or misleading.
- 03
Right to erasure
You can ask for your data to be erased once it is no longer needed, if you withdraw your consent, or if the processing is unlawful.
- 04
Right to restrict processing
You can ask for processing to be restricted where it is likely to cause you substantial harm.
- 05
Right to object to automated decisions
You cannot be subject to a decision taken by automated means alone where it significantly affects you, and you can object to automated processing for commercial advertising.
- 06
Right to withdraw consent
Where processing rests on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time, by a means as simple as the one used to give it.
